CSCL A Nordic Perspective

چکیده
Creating a functional and successful Virtual Interactive Learning Environment (VILE) requires both researching the potential building blocks of a VILE and ‘real-life’ (RL) strategizing, planning and implementation of large scale information-systems in large, complex organizations. Some issues requiring both academic and practical experience are becoming apparent that must be addressed if one thinks about opening up a VILE at one’s institution. As a former IS-consultant, working with specifying, planning and implementing enterprise-wide information-systems, who’s now gone researcher in the field of multimedia & education I believe I can bring some new insights from this ‘double take’ on the exercise. The issues identified and discussed in this article are: • The importance of discussing and deciding the reasons and goals of designing and implementing a VILE. • The importance of creating a development plan that ensures early successes. That is: What to offer, how to offer it and in what sequence to develop the many possible content-elements of the VILE. • The realization that the choice of pedagogy not only deeply affects the amount of resources required developing, implementing and delivering on-line courses or course-help. It also greatly influences the demands of the design, structure and content of courses or course-help as well as the potential for student-teacher and student-student-communications in the VILE. There are further issues such as problems with accreditation and (economic) compensation for scientific works delivered online but these belong to the domain of national, and international, law and academic politics, and will not be covered here. For the purposes of this article problems of accreditation and copyright are considered solved and not an issue. Why are VILE’s the next insanely great thing With the technical advances in Internet technology, especially in the area of Computer Mediated Communications (CMC) and Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), but also in the drop in cost and required prequalifications of producing high quality multimedia-content for the web, it’s apparently becoming feasible to: • Create a coherent environment for learning – not just stored courses • Allow synchronous and asynchronous communications to smooth the path of learning. • Streamline test and assignment reporting. • Integrate administerial and academic functions into a cohesive unit • Save money or teach more for the same amount • Provide for improved quality of learning

Multimedia Cscl Tools and Methods from a Knowledge Building Perspective
This paper discusses modalities of meaningful use of multimedia sources in Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) theory and the design of CSCL software tools. A discussion about main similarities and differences between the concepts of networking, coordination, cooperation, and collaboration is presented at the beginning. These concepts are compared with Knowledge Building. After pre...
متن کاملRegulation and Competition on the Nordic Power Market Lars Bergman
There is a long tradition of close cooperation and short term power exchanges between the major power companies in the Nordic countries, i.e. Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The main economic rationale of the short term power trade is the differences in terms of hydro power resource endowments between the countries and the resulting variations in short term relative cost conditions. Howeve...
متن کاملDepression and Antidepressants: A Nordic Perspective
A Nordic WelfAre Model? The Nordic countries are all established welfare states, and there has for some time existed a notion of a distinctive Nordic or Scandinavian welfare state; it is often understood in terms of broad, tax-financed public responsibility and legislated, collective, and universalistic solutions that respect employment interest yet aim at welfare and equity goals (1). Lately, ...
متن کاملKnowledge and learning claims in blog conversations: a discourse analysis in social psychology (DASP) perspective
This paper explores how discourse analysis in social psychology (DASP) can provide CSCL researchers with insights regarding how students perform knowing and learning. We investigated what counted as knowledge and learning as students in a large undergraduate lecture course shared their understandings of dietary supplements through blog conversations.
متن کاملEmerging and scripted roles in computer-supported collaborative learning
Emerging and scripted roles pose an intriguing approach to analysing and facilitating CSCL. The concept of emerging roles provides a perspective on how learners structure and self-regulate their CSCL processes. Emerging roles appear to be dynamic over longer periods of time in relation to learners’ advancing knowledge, but are often unequally distributed in ad hoc CSCL settings, e.g. a learner ...
متن کاملHalf-metallic properties of KP compound in a bulk and (001) surface of rock-salt structure: A b-initio study
Given the many applications of half-metals in the spintronics devices, we investigated the half-metallic properties of the KP compound in rock-salt (RS) and cesium chloride (CsCl) structural phases by using density functional theory. The results indicated that the KP compound as the half-metal in the RS structure, in contrast to the CsCl structure, due to the small lattice constant and failure ...
